St. Louis native returns home for performance with the iconic Paul Taylor Dance Company

Heather McGinley was born in St. Louis and graduated from OFallon Township High School in 2001. Now, shes returned to the region with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, performing Oct. 2 and 3 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center as the 50th season opener for Dance St. Louis.

Ive been dancing professionally in New York for seven years, said McGinley on Fridays Cityscape. This will be my first performance in St. Louis since beginning that career.

Heather McGinley and Sally Braley Bliss join Alex Heuer on "Cityscape" to discuss Paul Taylor Dance Company's performances this weekend.

McGinley said she realized she wanted to be a dancer the moment I realized that was a thing a person could do. That happened at age 11. It wasnt until my senior year in college that I realized that maybe its not ballet I want to go into, maybe it's modern dance. I realized I was better at it and I saw more opportunities to make that career happen in modern dance.

Sally Bliss, the former executive director of Dance St. Louis who now sits on the board of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, also joined McGinley in studio. She will be honored at the Oct. 3 performance. A dancer with a history stretching back to the 1960s, when she joined the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, she danced with both Michael Uthoff, the current executive director of Dance St. Louis, and Paul Taylor himself.

Its been 62 years [of the Paul Taylor Dance Company], Bliss said. I call him the god of modern dance because he is the one who is left. What hes done is amazing. Hes still creating, hes 85-years-old.

I call him the god of modern dance because he is the one who is left. What he's done is amazing. He's still creating, he's 85-years-old.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company consists of 16 members. Performances this weekend will feature three of Paul Taylors works, which McGinley said offers a nice spectrum of his repertoire, which consists of over 140 pieces.

The first is titled Mercuric Tidings, of the 1980s. Its a flurry of pure movement, McGinley said. The middle dance is Three Dubious Memories, which was choreographed in 2010 and portrays a love triangle from three different angles, using sparse and angular movement. The show will close with Piazzola Caldera, which is in the style of Paul Taylor but it shows the essence of tango.

Pennsylvania boilermakers want you to know that they helped build the Arch, too

Its headed for St. Louis, an arch to the sky;

A Gateway to the West, 630 feet high.

A hundred generations will see what youve made

Risin on the Mississippi with glory and grace.

An American Dream by Ike Erdman and David Bush

Retired welder Ike Erdmann is proud of the work that he and nearly 300 Pennsylvania boilermakers did on the Gateway Arch 50 years ago, so he wrote and recorded a song about them.

These workers never set foot on the Mississippi levee during the monument's construction. They didnt balance on sky-high scaffolding, with the sun in their eyes andthe wind on their faces. They did their work the cutting, grinding, bolting and welding in a now-shutteredPittsburgh-Des Moines (PDM) steel plant in western Pennsylvania, about 700 miles from St. Louis.

When the last whistle sounds, and the last train is gone,

Im gonna follow it to Missouri and see it glisten in the sun ...

And some of them never saw the completed Arch until 2012, when they got on a bus together and drove to the Gateway City to see for themselves the icon they helped build.

As St. Louis celebrates the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Arch, the Pennsylvania boilermakers have launched a drive to build a small-scale replica Baby Arch to commemorate their work in Warren, Penn., the home of their old PDM plant.

Listen as Ike Erdman talks and sings about working on the Arch.

And some of the workers will be in St. Louis for the anniversary celebration. The National Park Service Foundation has invited them to participate in a Meet the Builders event on Oct. 28 at the Missouri History Museum

'What is this thing, anyway?'

Erdman, 78, is hoping to sell recordings of his ode to the boilermakers titled An American Dream to help with the fundraising effort.

The majority of the people who live in Warren dont know that the Arch was built there. They thought that was all done out in St. Louis, Erdman says. That whole thing was made in Warren. Other than the sections underground, they were all fabricated at PDM in Warren, and they were erected in St. Louis by the ironworkers.

Erdman says he was hired byPDM in the spring of 1964 and paid $2.18 an hour, eventually working his way up to welder and a raise: to $2.81 an hour. He'd heard that the Warrenplant was working on a big project, and he had a young family to support.

The work was demanding; the hours long. But he says it was a good job with steady pay.

It wasnt like working in a grocery store. In the wintertime it was as cold inside as it was outside, Erdman said. And all they had in there was a pipe burner, like a potbelly stove. You had to wear long underwear.

Erdman, who plans to attend the anniversary events, says he left his welders mark a T on every section of the Arch that he completed, including the final section that was put into place on topping out day, Oct. 28, 1965.

He had one of the final tasks: welding the windows into section 142.

So I did that, and I think the next day I got laid off, he said. That was the keystone section they called it.

Erdman says the Warren boilermakers took pride in their work, even though they didnt really understand what they were building.

I heard guys say, Well, what is this thing anyway? And theyd say, Its an arch. For what? We didnt really care what it was, I guess, as long as we had a job, Erdman said. They kept telling us, This is going to be something. But we worked 10 hours and drove home.

'I saw the majesty of it'

The Pennsylvania workers were the craftsmen welders, burners, machinists, fitters who fabricated the double walls of the Arch sections: polished stainless steel on the outside surface and carbon steel on the inner skin.

The project required 900 tons of stainless steel; at the time, it was the largest use of stainless steel on a single project.

The walls, referred to as sandwiches, were shipped by railcar to the St. Louis riverfront, where PDMs construction crew took over.

Erdman says he saw the Gateway Arch for the first time in 1990 when he visited St. Louis for a Navy reunion and stayed at a riverfront hotel.

Thats when I come to appreciate that thing. When I saw the majesty of it, he said. I was pretty thankful and honored that I got to work on something like that. To them people in St. Louis its like the eighth wonder of the world.

The International Boilermakers union arranged the trip for the retirees now in their 70s, 80s, and 90s in 2012 to recognize the role they played in building the Arch. The union has also produced a film honoring their work.

Liz Forrestal, senior director of programs for the Jefferson National Parks Association, said that in past years, the anniversary events primarily featured Arch builders who live in the St. Louis area.

We in St. Louis kind of take it for granted that the Arch is wonderful, she said. We forget that others around the country, including these gentlemen who had a role in building it, are also very proud of their role.

Engineer Jack Wright of St. Louis, who worked on the Arch, regularly participates in the anniversary event. He believes the Pennsylvania men ought to be included, and he is looking to forward to meeting them.

Some of the men are going to see the structure for the first time. Thats going to be kind of neat, Wright said.

For his part, Erdmansaid he is looking forward to finally meeting some of the engineers and ironworkers who took the pieces of Arch made in Warren and stacked them 630 feet into the sky.

Makin history in Warren

The Warren PDM workers have formed the Committee of Retired Boilermakers to raise funds and awareness for their Baby Arch project. A local artist has produced a prototype of the replica Arch in black steel, but they estimate it will cost about $10,000 to buy the stainless steel they will need for the final version. A regional nonprofit has developed a website for their project.

The group hopes to put their model of the Arch outside a visitors center in Warren.

Erdman says that its important to remind Americans that we used to build things here. He believesthe Arch stands as a testament to everyone who helped build it,including the boilermakers in Pennsylvania and the engineers and ironworkers in St. Louis.

We were just plain old people. Wasnt nothing special about us, Erdman said. Were just good old American boys wanting to make a living. You know what I mean? Its just an honor for me to have been part of that generation.

And that was the message Erdmansays he hoped to convey in his song.

Hey, what are we makin, where is it goin?

He said, You might not believe this, were makin history in Warren.

Hylidae's digital noise was born on a rural farm in northeast Missouri

Almost exactly two years ago Jon Burkhart left a commune in northeast Missouri that he called home and moved back home to St. Louis. He brought with him a host of analog electronic musical equipment, a computer, and a new musical persona, Hylidae. The project was born in contrast to the rural lifestyle the musician had just ended.

It was kind of like my retreat from communal life to be making solo electronic music, Burkhart said.

St. Louis Public Radio's Willis Ryder Arnold talks with electronic music artist Hylidae on Friday's "Cityscape."

St. Louis-born Burkhart will release his first album titled intransitive this Saturday at Foam, a caf and bar on Cherokee Street. The album will be released on cassette and digital platforms in congruence with the citys rising trend in tape releases. The music fluctuates between ambient uplifting soundscapes and dance tracks with slightly industrial drum beats and warped vocals. Although the musics tone differs from its gestational environment, theres a strong adherence to a self-sufficient mentality characteristic of intentional communities. The music is written, produced, and recorded directly to Burkharts computer.

Burkhart lived at Sandhill Farm, one of Missouris oldest modern intentional communities before returning to the city. There, he began tinkering with synthesizers, sequencers, and digital music. For Burkhart the music balances between the personal and the hedonistic. Some tracks are intended to create a feeling of resolution in the wake of an ending relationship, others are meant to get people dancing.

The tracks are often dense and feature layers of instrumentation.

I want it to be this full orchestra of one instrument, Burkhart said of one song.

When Burkhart arrived in St. Louis he fell into an experimental electronic music scene featuring artists like Black James, Ragliani, Larva, Wax Fruit, and 18andcounting. Musically, Burkhart found a community but re-enteringurban living took some time.

That was an adjustment, to renting, having to go places for socialization, all of that was a bit of a culture shock, he said of the period.

Musicians in Burkharts community follow different approaches to music-making. Some manipulate old technologies like cassettes, others use guitar loops or are influenced by note-bending rock groups like Sonic Youth. Some create digital pastiche from sound samples, others are heavily influenced by hip-hop. Their influences range from dance music to harsh noise. According to Burkhart, these musicians are united by a willingness to push for new sounds. Similarly, these musicians' live shows vary from meditative observational performances to dance parties.

Despite the experimental edge, Burhart said his Hylidae project has one point.

Burkharts Hylidae record release party begins at 9:00 Saturday night at Foam on Cherokee Street.

St. Louis native Larry Krone examines craftsmanship, identity in 'The Best, Best Everything'

Nationally-known multimedia artist Larry Krone grew up in St. Louis, but has not returned for a major exhibition of his work since 2006. On Friday, Oct. 2, that changes when the Sheldon Art Galleries opens an exhibition of his pieces, which combine found textiles, graphics and craft materials with his own artistic stamp.

Larry Krone's art is collaborative, using craft work from anonymous hobbyists. Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, director of the Sheldon Art Galleries, says that it raises questions about artistic ownership and authorship.

Multimedia art usually refers to video and audio installations, but Krone uses it to describe the vast collection of materials he manipulates in his work. I started primarily as a visual artist and make objects and things using found materials, and over the years it sort of branched out into music, and Ive been doing costume design and some fashion stuff, too...So multimedia does describe these days what Im doing.

In his exhibit at the Sheldon, The Best, Best Everything, Krone uses found craft projects: works either finished or unfinished, given to him or snagged in thrift stores and sales. The projects are things that people do, either just to pass the time or maybe not with much attention, he explained. But I take all these things and put them together and then I add my own workmanship.

Krone attaches scraps of these crafts together, adding his own pops of color and texture in the form of sequins and graphics. In this way, Im sort of using the content of all those other people--the idea that these things came from all over the countryand who knows where, different eras, and making this sort of collaboration between all of us. A symbolic one, at least.

Krone said this way of collaborating with unknown artists allows their tastes and inspirations to shrine through his assumption of their work. Much of his work focuses on questions of identity: the identities of the people who crafted the pieces which he combines and manipulates in addition to his own, as an artist and as an individual.

He uses the element of chance, and using other peoples artwork, so to speak...so he doesnt feel it necessary to completely be the single, sole author. And I think thats part of it, as well, said Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, director of the Sheldon Art Galleries.

The Best, Best Everything speaks well to the sense of multiple and diverse ownership in Krones art, and to the bright, various patterns that characterize it. I thought that the title would make people think of abundance and just, sort of like, too much stuff, tons and tons of great stuff, and thats sort of what the show looks like to me. The entire exhibit, Krone said, is thick with spangles and knickknacks and personal touches.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a floor-length cape crafted from found projects, an object of decadence made of hundreds of embroideries patched together and covered with sequins and extra detail. The cape is wearable, Krone said, but first and foremost is a statement about authorship, craftsmanship and identity.

Really, the piece stands as an art piece for people to look at--but for me its something very personal, Krone said. I mean, I spent two and a half years working on that...and I spent a lot of time with every individual piece.

The exhibition at the Sheldon is working in tandem with other local galleries to showcase Krones work, including Craft Alliance, with its Innovation in Textiles 10 symposium, and projects+gallery in the Central West End, in an exhibition entitled Larry Krone The Selling Sound of Country, which also opens Oct. 2.

The Sheldon Art Galleries also features St. Louis painter Julie Malone, a traveling exhibit of indigenous photography, and an exhibit of childrens musical instruments designed and constructed by students in the Sheldons STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) program.

Cityscapeis produced byMary Edwards,Alex Heuer, andKelly Moffitt. The show is sponsored in part by theMissouri Arts Council, theRegional Arts Commission, and theArts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis.

Pagedale alderman charged with domestic abuse after disliking wife's dinner

By Elizabeth Matthews

PAGEDALE, Mo. (KSDK) - A Pagedale alderman is behind bars after police say he broke his wife's wrist because he was upset that she had cooked chicken for dinner.

James Thomasson, 78, is charged with second degree felony domestic assault. Those that know him best are shocked to learn about the charges and what happened around 10 p.m. Monday. Police say the argument started over what was for dinner.

County police say the incident happened at their home in Pagedale when Alderman Thomasson got upset over what his wife had cooked for dinner. She told police he got verbally, and then physically abusive, grabbing her wrist, twisting it, and breaking it. Police say she told him to leave the room and she left driving herself to the hospital.

"This is the first thing I ever hear anything negative about him in 30 years," said fellow Alderperson Pauline Catmet. She says Thomasson is a good man and seemed to have a good marriage.

"When she see him and get ready to leave, I see her kiss him and you know, this is a shock to me," she said.

Women's Safe House director says the ages of the suspect, 78, and wife, 68, is not a shock.

"It doesn't surprise me at all that the incident occurred, it doesn't surprise me that it allegedly was about food, or that the age group is over 65," said Sylvia J. Jackson, executive director of Women's Safe House, who adds they've seen an increase in older abuse victims.

"One in three women, that's one in three in our lifetime is going to be a victim of domestic violence and sexual assault now there two of us talking but if the cameraperson was a female it would be one of us," said Jackson.

Catmet says everyone deserves a second chance, but the Pagedale Aldermanic Board needs to meet and discuss the criminal charges to see if Thomasson will remain an alderman.

"This is the first time something like this ever happened," said Catmet.

If you or anyone you know is affected by domestic violence there is help available. Call the Women's Safe House at 314-772-4535, visit their website, or visitALIVE or Saint Martha's Hall.

Dave Spence takes name out of running for police board

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Former gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence took his name out of the running for the St. Louis County Police Board Tuesday night.

The five-seat board now only has two members because of three recent resignations. All the resignations came as the FBI started to look into concerns about construction contracts for the new crime lab.

The St. Louis County director of communications says candidates for the police board are dropping out because of new legislation passed by the St. Louis County Council.

"The personal information and the business information that is now being required of those potential candidates is information that is not even being required of members of the county council themselves," said Patricia Washington.

County Executive Charlie Dooley makes the appointments, and the appointees must be approved by the County Council.

Saint Louis Chamber Chorus remembers and renews in its 60th season

The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus begins its diamond jubilee season Sunday, September 27, in celebration of its long tradition of introducing a cappella musicfamiliar, unfamiliar, new, traditionalto St. Louis audiences.

We try to present to the public the great choral piecesunaccompanied choral piecesby some very familiar names: Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, various people that you would know if youre into classical music, said artistic director Philip Barnes. But we intersperse those pieces with some unfamiliar works. And some of those are pieces that I believe are unfairly neglected, all the way back to the 15th century.

Barnes has led the Chorus for 27 years. Its quite something, particularly when you consider that were sort of like the thinking persons choir, he said. We dont perform music that you sit back and go, oh, I love this old chestnutwere dedicated to broadening your horizons and giving you experiences that you wouldnt get anywhere else. And so the fact that weve made it to 60thats a great feeling.

The St. Louis Chamber Chorus begins is 60th season Sunday, September 27. Artistic director Philip Barnes and composer-in-residence Melissa Dunphy joined "Cityscape" to discuss the diamond jubilee anniversary season.

The opening concert of the season, Sing a New Song, reflects and remembers the Chorus 60 years of diverse repertoire. It will feature Renaissance music, reconstructed by Washington University musicologist Craig Monson; archetypal American compositions such as Coplands In The Beginning; and chamber pieces by Pachelbel, Brahms, Holst, and Sibelius.

In celebration of St. Louis and the Chorus 60 years here, the Chorus will also perform an original work by composer-in-residence Melissa Dunphy, titled Alpha and Omega, which revels in the rebirth of a city. Alpha & Omega is composed of pieces of text from Revelations, John Bunyans The Pilgrims Progress, and the African-American spiritual Oh, what a beautiful city.

Fittingly, the Chorus will perform Dunphys new piece at Third Baptist Church. Its a wonderful space to perform choral music, Barnes said. Of course, thats why we chose Bunyan, because hes such a pillar of Baptist theology, and we want to put all these different themes together.

Its a wonderful piece, Barnes added, to Dunphy. Thank you.

Dunphys position was established in 1998, signifying the Chorus mission of commissioning and presenting new work. Dunphy is now the fourth composer-in-residence. Its so great to be part of a choir thats keeping choral music alive, she said.

Dunphy, who was raised in Brisbane, Australia before moving to Philadelphia, said that she takes special interest in the words of a song. Her choral compositions often feature non-traditional lyrics: combinations of thematically similar but vastly different textsand in one case, a verbatim transcript of a state Senate testimony.

Dunphy derived the lyrics to What do you think I fought for at Omaha Beach? from a speech given by World War II veteran Phillip Spooner to the Maine Senate, in which he spoke passionately in favor of same-sex marriage as a fundamental issue of equality. The video of Spooners testimony went viral, Dunphy said, and had her sobbing in the studio. She immediately decided to turn it into a choral piece. The Chorus performed and recorded the song in its 2012-13 season.

I perform this piece because I think first and foremost its a wonderful piece of music, Barnes said. And I was very gratified that people of persuasions, of different points of view on the argument, came together and said, this is worth doing, this piece, because its musical value is so high.

All season long, the Chorus will nod to its practice of commissioning and premiering new work. In the opening concert, the Chorus will revisit Music and Ceremonies, composed by founder Ronald Amatt 20 years ago.

Revisiting old pieces as the Chorus turns 60, Barnes said, is a reminder that the organization must continuously renew itself. I think youre only as good as your last performance. And I think that if you dont have a vision for the future, you wont have one. The last thing we can do is sit back on our laurels.
